Assessments
Behind the Curtain - Making Thinking Visible
Detailed description of how assessments will demonstrate mastery of standards
The individual portfolio will demonstrate the mastery of standards and objectives. In the portfolio there are three stages the students will need to show mastery of. The first stage is composed of the nanotechnology standards and objectives. The second stage has the DNA to protein synthesis standards and objectives. The last stage covers the genetics standards and objectives. The students will answer each of the stage objectives on their own and in their own manner as long as they do relate it back to class. This allows for some student choice as well as the mastery of the concepts.

Detailed plan of how we will provide feedback and enable them to revise.
The students will be provided feedback in many manners as well as having time to revise and create better products. For the individual portfolio, the students will be turning in the stages at the end of each week. This will allow for the teach to make some corrections and possibly point out missing areas within the stage. The final week of the unit will be used as revision time for the students to make corrections to the individual portfolio. The students will also get a chance to revise or do better on the post-test because they will first take the pre-test and then each week as the material is covered students will take mini formative assessments on the material. This means during the post-test it will be the third time the students have seen the questions. The students will have practice group presentation time within small groups which will allow their classmates to provide feedback before giving their final presentation. The group can then make changes to the presentation.
Detailed description of how the final assessment will evaluate content knowledge, final product, processes used by students, and life skills
The final assessments which will be completed for this unit will be the group presentation, individual portfolio, and post-test. The content knowledge should be visible in each of the different final assessments but most visible in the individual portfolio the students will be turning in. The final product is the group presentation and the students will be evaluated as a group for this part of their grade. The unit uses the process of the scientific method for the students to follow as they complete their group presentation. Each group begins with a question and then builds with research and is summarized in a presentation to the sixth graders. The 21st Century Skills are taught throughout the unit and will be evaluated throughout the unit as well, but the group presentation will show how far the students have come with their 21st Century Skills during the unit.
Detailed descriptions of how the final assessments will focus on both team products and individual learning
The final assessments will have both team and individual components. The team component is the group presentation. The individual components of the final assessment include the individual portfolio and the post-test. The majority of the student’s grade will come from individual contribution in order to prevent students getting grades which they have not earned.
Detailed plan for how students will present their products publicly.
Students will present their products publicly by presenting to the sixth graders. The students will have poster sessions (possibly in the gym) and the sixth graders will walk around the room visiting each of the students. The students will have more practice giving presentations to small groups over and over again. This should also help those students who have a fear of being up in front of the whole class. The sixth graders will receive 10 "dollars" to spend on the projects of their choice. This allows the sixth graders to spend their money on whichever projects they like and understand the best. The sixth graders will place the money in a jar as they leave on final day of presentations. There will be an award for the group that receives the most money.
